u3a Gosport celebrates 30 years with a joyous anniversary picnic

Community, Connection, and Lifelong Learning Shine at Milestone Event In a vibrant display of unity and celebration, members of u3a Gosport gathered on August 14th 2025 for a 30th Anniversary Picnic, marking three decades of lifelong learning, friendship, and community engagement in Gosport. The event, held under clear summer skies at Nicholson Gardens, drew participants from across the borough, reaffirming the u3a’s enduring spirit and the warmth that has defined it since its founding.

Celebrating Thirty Years of Achievement

The u3a movement was established in the UK to encourage those no longer in full time work to continue learning, socialising, and sharing their skills beyond retirement. Gosport’s branch, founded in 1995, has grown from a modest group of enthusiastic locals into a thriving organisation with nearly three hundred members & over forty Interest Groups.

This milestone event was more than a picnic—it was a testament to the vision of the original founders Pat Wharton & Mary Patchett. The picnic brought together long-standing members who have witnessed the group’s evolution over the years, as well as newer faces eager to become part of the u3a Gosport story.

Nicholson Gardens were adorned with blue and yellow bunting & balloons, echoing the u3a’s signature colours. There was a quiz & craft items for sale. Members raised a toast to the past, present, and future of u3a Gosport with a glass of Bucks Fizz, enjoyed birthday cake, exchanged stories and laughter.

Adding to the sense of occasion, the Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Kirsten Bradley attended. As the Mayor found time to speak to everyone who was there, she highlighted the vital role that u3a Gosport plays in fostering connection and wellbeing among older adults.

Our members were also pleased to speak to Cllr Lesley Meenaghan.

The Chair closed the afternoon with heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed to the day’s success.
