I Am Born is a visual arts project that takes its name from the first chapter of Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield and is part of ‘In Our Words’-a year of literature, literacy, and storytelling led by Portsmouth Creates.

Working with seniors at Braemar Care Home and young people from Motiv8 and the Brook Club, artists Ally Ashworth and Rachel Johnston have used archival imagery from the Portsmouth History Centre, The News Portsmouth and The D-Day Story to inspire conversation and create stories in visual form. You can see the banners and textile collages in the historic setting of Storehouse 9.

Enter through the main gates and get a free Historic Quarter Pass from the Visitor Centre: Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Victory Gate, HM Naval Base Portsmouth, PO1 3LJ.

This project has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and funding from Portsmouth Creates.
